I proposed in January with a 1.5ct princess cut lab diamond, IGI, E-VS1. I thought it was a beautiful ring. She cried. She said yes. I thought we were done.
Last week she sat me down and said she's been "thinking a lot" and she would really prefer a natural diamond. Her reason: "I don't want to feel embarrassed when people ask about my ring and I have to say it's lab grown."
I'm not opposed to what she wants, but I'm struggling with a few things:
- She knew it was lab when I proposed. She said she loved it.
- We agreed on a budget and the lab stone let us get a much larger, better-graded stone within that budget.
- Upgrading to natural at 1.5ct E-VS1 would cost roughly $9,000-11,000 more.
- We're saving for a house.
I love her. I want her to be happy. But I also feel like the goalposts moved and I don't know what to do.

If she knew it was lab when she said yes, then she said yes knowing that. That's not a minor detail she missed — it's a core fact about the ring. Changing it six months later because of social pressure from others is her choosing other people's opinions over a decision she made with you. That's worth a serious, honest conversation.
